Our team has developed multiple innovative population data products at 30m resolution. At regional and national levels, we use our RegionPop method which utilizes machine learning derived indicators from satellite imagery along with spatial statistical models to estimate population.

For population mapping within cities use an even more refined approach called CityPop which utilizes numerous additional datasets including building footprints, vegetation, land use, building heights and street networks to generate high accuracy population maps which can capture the fine scale heterogeneity within cities.

RegionPop is currently available for India and the United States. Data for more countries is under development. Our RegionPop 2011 data for India has been validated with Census data the town and village level and provides the highest accuracy when compared to all other gridded population datasets. RegionPop 2023 for India builds on this and currently provides the best gridded population estimates for India. CityPop 2023 is available for select cities in India, with more cities under development.
